Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the tinted part of cosmetic soft contact lenses (SCLs) on visual function under mesopic conditions, as well as to compare these differences between SCLs with different diameters of the central clear zone.

Methods: Pupil size, shielded pupil size in each tinted lens zone, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and temporal visual field were evaluated in 30 participants who had worn either clear or cosmetic SCLs with different clear-zone diameters (5.2 mm and 6.4 mm) under mesopic conditions.

Results: Pupil size increased, while visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and temporal visual field decreased in individuals who had worn cosmetic SCLs under mesopic conditions. Cosmetic SCLs with a smaller central clear zone diameter were associated with greater visual function deterioration. Every evaluation item showed a statistically significant difference between individuals who had worn cosmetic SCLs with a central clear zone diameter of 5.2 mm and those who had worn clear SCLs.

Conclusions: After wearing cosmetic SCLs under mesopic conditions, the tinted lens zone covered dilated pupils. This caused a reduction in visual function. Therefore, we recommend that opticians, when selling these lenses, explain the disadvantages of wearing them at night to the buyers.
